Execution & Action

With my purpose clear, I needed a plan to make it happen. Thus, the International  Muslim Marriage Retreat was born in 2019. It was a tremendous success, including Muslims, Christians, and interfaith couples who value marriage. The tools we gained were priceless. The statement "If you build it, they will come" resonates deeply with me. It became clear that while I was searching for tools to enhance my marriage, other couples were also desperately seeking the same.

Evolving in a Healthy Way

After 19 years of marriage, I recognized that our relationship had shifted from being a partnership to focusing primarily on parenting responsibilities and I didn’t want to wake up 10 years later no longer knowing my husband. I realized that if I felt this way, other married couples might be experiencing similar feelings.

We needed to Reboot—restart our relationship to get back to working normally, much like a computer that needs rebooting after a crash. We also needed to Reconnect—re-establish our bond through communication and emotional intimacy, beyond just managing schedules and routines. Lastly, we needed to Refocus, in the Webster sense of adjusting the focus of a lens or one's eye, to realign our relationship priorities and perspective.

Testimonials from past participants

The 4th Annual Muslim Marriage Retreat was amazing. It allowed my beloved and me to let go of everything else and focus on each other. The event was presented in a loving, adult environment with the reminder that we are each other's strength because Allah (God) created us so. I left the retreat feeling wiser, more loving and compassionate to my mate, and excited about what's to come. The facilities were nice, the food was excellent, and we were entertained and catered to. I can't wait for next year's retreat!  -Bilal and April Muhammad

We have been to 3 of the Muslim Marriage Retreats and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. Meeting with other couples and sharing our common experiences and learning how marriage takes work, commitment, and compromise has been very rewarding. With all of the different activities that you provide from Art to Dancing lessons the great food and advice given by very knowledgeable people our souls get nourished in many ways. We enjoyed it so much that we had to share the 2022 Marriage Retreat with my oldest son and his wife. It was also great to have people’s of other faith communities to experience it as well. Each one gets better and better every year. May Allah continue to Bless you in this great ministry.

The 3rd Annual Muslim Marriage retreat was beyond anything I could have imagined! The hosts and other couples were warm, friendly and supportive; we laughed, learned, fellowshiped and cried together. Relationship and marital advice that transcended religion was imparted by the guest speakers as well as other couples. Being newlyweds (2 years married), it was AWESOME to be surrounded by husbands and wives who had been together for 20, 30 and even 40 years, who were able to share "pearls of wisdom" with us.  It was my husband's and I first retreat but needless to say it will NOT be our last!  -Clifton & Trina

Luqman and I share our DEEPEST GRATITUDE to you April for bringing your Divine Vision to Life & Light for the benefit of COUNTLESS other couples, Muslim & Non-Muslim alike. I am STILL FULL from being in such a BEAUTIFUL, LOVING & HEART-WARMING SPACE with PEOPLE OF ALL WALKS OF FAITH!!! The LOVE shown between the MUSLIM & CHRISTIAN ATTENDEES, VOLUNTEERS, WORKERS & PERFORMERS was TOP-TIER ALL THE PRAISE & THANKS ARE DUE TO G-D.

The Muslim Marriage Retreat focused on Reboot, Reconnecting, and Refocus and welcomed an atmosphere for all attendees. This Marriage Retreat was better than we anticipated. We were introduced to various activities and connected with other couples through conversations and art.

The retreat host designed a shared space for couples to reconnect in bonding activities. We shared personal experiences and positive feedback in refocusing, responding, and respecting others' opinions. This event promoted faith, prayers, love, and togetherness. The locations and food were a treat too!

Wali and I had such an amazing time at the marriage retreat we totally enjoyed ourselves immensely. It was such a pleasant atmosphere and we so loved being in the company of other couples of all ages.
It was so refreshing after being indoors for quite some time to be able to spend some time with our brothers and our sisters.

Mahajj & April you are the most excellent hosts!

The entertainment was awesome the nourishment for the mind body and soul was the spectacular. We so look forward to the next retreat and it is our desire to bring one couple along with us that otherwise may not be able to attend.  -Linda & Wali

I have a whole new way of hearing "Niama" after Brother Hajj offered it as a representation of his love for you.  The entire day was filled with faith-filled expressions ( verbally,  visually, & physically) from the beautiful ( peaceful) location at Cathedral of Praise Ministries' fellowship  hall, to the last game & prize give-a-way.  Of course I am including the Chef's meal presentation  with excellent selections for vegetarian and vegan entrees.

The experiences of "real-life" love and commitment of every age group to God and all the people who were present made the retreat feel so special. I am so glad we were able to attend.  -Johnny & Marcquinne Yancey

The 4th annual Muslim marriage retreat was a great event!    This is our 3rd year attending!  Over four years ago, it was April's vision to create a platform for married couples in the Muslim faith for sharing resources to discuss stronger and longer marriages in a safe space.  April soon recognized that any black married couple would benefit from attending the retreat.  She opened the invitation to family and friends of the Christian faith to participate as well because she understands the importance of a strong black marriage within the black family.  Yes, this is a Muslim marriage retreat for Muslims.  We were aware of that before we signed up.  We really enjoyed the entertainment and look forward to next year's event.

The Marriage Retreat in 2019 and 2020 were enjoyable.  My husband and I had a great time. The presenters were great. The atmosphere  was great. The food was amazing. The associates and friends that were there were great. Due to Covid 19 events were shut down. My husband and I are eagerly looking forward to the next one in 2022.

In the 20th Century, and the age of technology, we have the luxury of living in virtual relationships and real-life isolation. Most of us do not live as a part of a large family or community, where we would normally develop a sense of comfort, safety and connectivity with those around us. Our culture has grown to value independence, autonomy, self-sufficiency, but not intimacy. Within this cultural framework, couples today must provide the bulk of emotional needs that a community used to supply.
